Moxibustion For Headaches

There are different types of headaches. In this book, I will mainly focus on the cold type of headache.

Coldness can come from the outside, such as from the weather, or sometimes from the inside environment, such as from the air conditioning. People can easily get headaches from such coldness.

Moxibustion is a great way to relieve such headaches. And it’s very simple. You can just do the moxibustion at Feng Chi (GB20) point. You can either just use a handheld moxibustion stick, or you can use a moxibustion box. For more professional ways, you can use ginger moxibustion on the five points solution, which is GV20 plus the four points, 1 inch away from the front, back, left and right side, around GV20.

A young girl in her 20s shared her experience, on the Chinese moxibustion network.

“I had been suffering from headaches for three or four years. At the beginning, I wouldn’t have the pain for long. Later, the pain lasted longer and longer. I found that every time I caught a cold, I had a headache, and after a while, I started having a runny nose. After taking Western medicine for the cold and headache, the pain gradually disappeared. But every time I had pain, I took Western medicine. I took more and more medicine, and it would take several days to stop the headache. I felt that if this continued, the situation would only get worse. After I heard that moxibustion could treat headaches, I decided to give it a try. When I had a cold and a headache again, I didn’t take any medicine and insisted on moxibustion for two days. Because I had to work, I couldn’t hold the moxibustion roll all the time. So, I put a moxibustion jar on top of my head. I kept adding short moxa rolls after it burnt out. After one day, I felt that the headache was relieved a lot. I continued the next day. After two days, my headache was completely gone, and I didn’t have a runny nose anymore. Later, whenever I caught a cold, I would use moxibustion this way. The effect was very good. The runny nose slowly stopped completely, and the sneezing was less.

Clinically, I would add two more acupuncture points, (GV17) Da Zhui and (CV8) Shen Que.  It could make her heal faster. But nevertheless, she did a great job.

All these are just regular people without any Chinese medicine or acupuncture knowledge. The effect is already very good. So I strongly encourage you to try moxibustion if you have this type of cold headache.
