Moxa or mugwort is native to Europe and Asia but has naturalized through much of the world. It is very tolerant of a wide range of climatic conditions and is reported to occur from the high mountainous regions of the Northern Himalayas to the warm temperate regions of South America. The only two continents where it has not been documented are Africa and Antarctica.

As mentioned before, it seems geographic, and climate conditions have a certain impact on the smell and possibly on the effect. As I am not sure whether the moxa I am using or referring to is the same as mugwort, I would still prefer to use the term moxa for now.

Good quality moxa is mainly grown in China, and in particular geographic area. Some top-quality moxa herbs are grown in Qi Chun County of Hu Bei Province. But it’s a small area with limited and expensive moxa produce. Normally, it’s not easy to find the moxa really coming from that area. The most famous location for moxa herb production is Nan Yang City of He Nan Province. Due to its unique geographic location and climate characteristics, this big area is very suitable for high quality moxa growth. If you smell the fresh moxa leaves from there, you can sense the unique aroma and qi.
